One of the most frequent questions asked at Hashimoto’s Lifestyle is, "What does a Hashimoto's flare-up feel like?" Today, we're getting into that.

The Short Answer?

Basically any hypothyroid or hyperthyroid symptom.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland. This condition is a bit of an enigma because its symptoms can mimic both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism-Like Symptoms:

For example, some of they hypothyroid symptoms could be:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Cold sensitivity
  • Hair loss
  • Dry skin
  • Constipation

Hyperthyroidism-Like Symptoms:

On the other hand, the hyperthyroid symptoms could be:

  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Palpitations
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Tremors

Why the mix of symptoms? Occasionally, the damaged thyroid releases a surge of hormones, leading to hyperthyroid-like symptoms. Over time, as the thyroid gets progressively damaged, it produces fewer hormones, leading to hypothyroid symptoms.

Navigating a Flare-Up

If you or someone you know suspects they're going through a flare-up, it's essential to:

  1. Consult a Doctor: Only a medical professional can provide an accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate management.
  2. Track Symptoms: Keeping a journal of symptoms can help identify triggers or patterns and is valuable information for your healthcare provider. (Such as the Hashimoto’s Self-Care Journal)
  3. Prioritize Self-Care: Stress can be a trigger for many. Ensure you're practicing self-care, whether it's maintaining a healthy diet, meditation, reading, or taking leisurely walks.
  4. Stay Educated: The more you understand Hashimoto's, the better equipped you'll be to navigate its challenges. My book, I Have Hashimoto’s, Now What? provides a comprehensive guide on managing and understanding the condition.

Hashimoto's can be unpredictable. But with the right information, support, and medical care, it's manageable. Remember, you're not alone on this journey. Our community is here to support and guide you every step of the way.
